In the works of Vytautas Kairiūkštis who is titled as Lithuanian avant-garde pioneer, ideas of Constructivism, Suprematism, Cubism are combined. Innovative works of V.Kairiūkštis were often shocking to the visitors of exhibitions those days, therefore he came into the Lithuanian art’s history of the first half of twentieth century as one of the most prominent modernists.
The most interesting phase of the artist’s career – the interwar period. This period is characterized by V. Kairiūkštis’ creative features revealed in one of the most famous artist’s work – small format painting “Kubistinė kompozicija. Sėdinti moteris” (“Cubist composition. Seated Woman”).
In the center of the painting we can see a superimposed figure of a woman. A woman is probably the most favorite motif in the works of V. Kairiūkštis, she served as a tool to the experiments of shapes. The illustration of the body parts are made abstract to great extent into geometric shapes, and image space is fragmented into geometric plane surface. Strict, straight lines and free wavy curves of woman’s hair and body fit in the composition of dynamic diagonals. Bright and warm color, smooth and thin brushwork – typical creative plastic language features of V.Kairiūkštis – are revealed in this work of art.
The title of this work suggests that this composition was created on the basis of the principles of Cubism and shows the artist’s sympathy for this avant-garde art direction. However, the picture’s finesse, easy lyricism and an inclination to the décor also shows the influence of decostyle which has significantly reduced the bold creative artistic language of Vytautas Kairiūkštis.
